Home Performance Programs

We haven’t counted, but someone told us there are at least 80 home performance improvement programs available. Our home energy consultants support several of them.

Discussions in this article include

Currently Supported Home Performance Programs

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR. The Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program sets targets for improving existing houses. The program is usually hosted by a regional organization, such as Southface Energy Institute. Often, this program is sponsored by a utility company, such as Georgia Power.

ENERGY STAR Rated Homes. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) jointly establish requirements of rating a new home with an ENERGY STAR certification through their ENERGY STAR Rated Homes Program.

EarthCraft House. EarhCraft House is a Southeastern United States regional program for constructing houses using a variety of green building techniques. All of these home are at least ENERGY STAR rated and may qualify under other programs as well.

Home Energy Efficient Mortgages (EEMs). The US Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has programs, such as Energy Efficient Mortgages, where lenders role the cost of energy improvements into the loan without requiring additional down payments by the homeowner.

Our Future . . .
